Young chefs cook up a storm at Maiden Erlegh

February 03, 2010

Maiden Erlegh School students cooked up a storm in the local heat of the annual Rotary Young Chef competition.

The first round, hosted by the Rotary Club of Loddon Vale, took place at the Earley school on Wednesday last week.

Eight students took part in the challenge to create a healthy two-course meal for two people for under £10 and in less than two hours.

The winner of the heat was Bethany Jones who wowed the judges with a combination of home-made chicken nuggets coated in golden breadcrumbs served with ratatouille and creamy mashed potato.

This was followed by scrumptious chocolate-coated crepes topped off with summer berry compote and whisked double cream.

Fellow student Jake Johnson took second place with his tasty tarragon and butter stuffed chicken breast wrapped in Parma ham on celeriac and potato mash served with green beans.

For dessert he prepared zesty lemon tart with raspberry coulis.

Bethany won a £25 book voucher from Kitchen Capers cooking school and a gold Rotary Young Chef medal, while Jake received £15 in vouchers and a silver medal.

Bethany will now compete at the Rotary District 1090 Young Chef 2010 Finals Competition on Saturday, February 27, at Faringdon Community College, Oxfordshire, where the winner will go on to the South East of England Rotary Young Chef 2010 Final at a venue yet to be announced.
