Avenue School is ‘highly commended’ in national award

July 03, 2009

A special needs school has been highly commended in a national award.

The Avenue School in Tilehurst received the commendation in the Inspiring Design award in the schools category at the British Council for School Environments.

The school was originally a classroom unit attached to a school in Oxford Road in 1901 before a complete school was built in Northumberland Avenue around 1909. It was then one of the first in the country designed specifically for youngsters with special needs.

In September last year the school moved from its old site in Basingstoke Road to its current home in Conwy Close and a brand new £19 million building.

Assistant headteacher Mary Harris said: “It’s fantastic news and it’s nice to be recognised but I would love to see the building that won because if it is better than this it must be amazing.”
