School meals up £2 a month

December 08, 2008

Primary school meals have gone up 10p because of increases in staff costs and the price of food.

Contractors ISS Caterhouse, which provides meals at 28 of the borough’s primary schools, asked Bracknell Forest Council to approve an increase from £1.75 to £1.85 a day from the beginning of this school term.

The contractors cited an increase in the minimum wage from £5.52 to £5.79 as a reason, as well as the rising price of food.

The council has a contract with ISS Caterhouse that stipulates that meals should not go above £1.82 this year.

However, it approved the rise, which will cost parents an extra £2 a month.

The number of children taking school meals has increased from 22 per cent in September 2006 to 27 per cent now.
