Church bid to run new estate school

An education trust and a Christian diocese are battling it out to provide a new primary school at Jennett’s Park.

Proposals from CfBT Education Trust, which runs eight schools including Waverley School in Wokingham, and Oxford Diocesan Board of Education have outlined how they would run the school.

Their ideas, which include linking the school to others overseas and opening the building to the community, were tabled at a public meeting on Wednesday.

David Watkins, chief officer for performance and resource at Bracknell Forest Council, said: “I am really pleased with the strength of the two proposals and am looking forward to hearing the views of residents during the consultation.”

People had the opportunity to hear presentations from both applicants and ask questions at the meeting in the temporary community centre on the new development beside the A329(M).

The application from CfBT, which is based in Reading, sets out plans to model the school on a teaching hospital by using “the best evidence-based methods”.

The Oxford Diocese said the top priority for the school was a “community school”, with other groups able to use the building out of hours.

Both schools would be open to children of any faith, no faith or any race and would be state-run.

The council, which has not bid to run the school, will choose between the applicants under the rules which means the provision of all new schools is put out to tender.

The public consultation on the plans runs until Friday, October 21.

Lesley Heale, the council’s director for social care and learning, said: “I urge residents to give us your thoughts on this new school.

“Giving the council your views during the consultation is an excellent way to say what you would like to see for the borough’s young people.”

CfBT wants to use “the best evidence-based methods”.

That seems to put it in stark contrast with The Oxford Diocese: a proponent of faith-based methods.

The Diocese says "the top priority for the school was a 'community school'". Why then have a school focused on a single religious viewpoint instead of focused on the needs of the community?

As you can see, CfBT would get my vote!
