Go walking to mark 'Walk in the Woods' month

By Linda Fort
May 11, 2012

Tree wardens in Reading are urging everyone to take a walk in the woods in May.

They have organised a series of walks to mark the Tree Council’s Walk in the Woods month and to encourage everyone to the woods in spring when flowers, bird song and green leaves make them particularly attractive.

Events in Reading are as follows:

Wednesday, May 16: A Tree Quest workshop at Reading Children’s Festival called Meadow Madness. Art and drama activities to explore the trees of Christchurch Meadows. Suitable for four to 11-year-olds, there is room for 12 children per session plus their parents or carers. Sessions from 11.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 2.30pm, led by Natalie Ganpatsingh of Nature Nurture CIC.

Monday, May 28: An evening walk around Prospect Park led by Dr Carolyn Jenkins. The park was laid out for John Liebenrood in the mid-19th Century around an 18th Century house. Meet at Prospect Park Pavilion at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start.

Wednesday, May 30: An after-school workshop called Wild Woods Adventure Club will be held at the Rookery in Prospect Park as part of Reading Children’s Festival. The workshop is suitable for four to 11-year-olds with places for 12 children, plus their parents or carers. The session runs from 3.45pm to 6pm and is led by Natalie Ganpatsingh.

To book a workshop, call (0118) 937 2771 or email communications@reading.gov.uk

Anything that gets people outside walking in the woods and parks is a good thing.

People who work elsewhere can always go to places themselves. There are other groups in Reading who organise works if you want to walk in a group.

'Walk in the Woods' month culminates in a walk around Prospect Park. You couldn't make it up. There are some very pleasant woods within a few miles of Reading, but not actually in Reading, which is mostly noted for being a town. Without woodland.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, it's really just along the Kennet.

What about people who work full time?

Those working until 5.30 or later wouldn't be able to make the walk at Prospect Park by 6.15 if working other side of town.

Couldn't something have been arranged for a Saturday or Sunday too, ie for people who perhaps don't know the area that well and would prefer to walk with groups of people rather than alone?
