Blooming lovely beanpole day
May 02, 2012
Keen gardeners, allotmenteers and conservationists braved the wind and the rain on Saturday to take part in National Beanpole Day.
The local event was held at Caversham Court Gardens on the banks of the River Thames.
Groups from across the borough including beekeepers, small mammal enthusiasts, allotment holders and growers set up their stalls to promote their organisations and encourage people to join up.
The Reading in Bloom committee was also there to urge people to enter the annual contest.
They handed out leaflets which can now be picked up at libraries, at Reading Civic Centre and at the Reading Minister office (next door to Bill’s Produce Store).
Entries for the Reading in Bloom contest have to be in by Sunday, July 1. The National Beanpole Day event was organised by the Friends of Caversham Court Gardens.
Despite the wind and rain, a steady stream of visitors called in and walked away with bags full of bedding plants, vegetables and seedlings.
