Don't disturb wildfowl
December 30, 2010
A bird protection charity is warning people not to disturb flocks of ducks, geese and swans while freezing conditions restrict their feeding opportunities.
The RSPB says that while lakes and rivers are frozen it is more difficult for birds to find food and if they are disturbed and forced to fly this uses up precious energy reserves.
Sophie McCallum, RSPB south east media officer, said: “We hope people out and about in the countryside will heed our advice, allowing thousands of birds which visit during the winter a better chance of survival.
“You can still go out and enjoy all the wonderful wildlife but we just ask that you do it from a distance.”
