Neighbours urged to keep gardens tidy

December 10, 2010

Households could be liable if they fail to keep their gardens under control.

Plants that grow over footpaths can be a danger and residents are being urged to keep on top of their gardening.

Steve Loudoun, chief officer for environment and public protection at Bracknell Forest Council, said that the efforts of residents who cleared autumn leaves from areas around their home and cut back foliage were greatly appreciated.

However, there were householders who failed to look after their gardens.

He said: “Each year we receive complaints from residents whose neighbours have allowed their gardens to get out of control.

“When plants grow over footpaths this causes access and safety problems to the public trying to use that path.

“This is not a very neighbourly act and an act which could put someone at risk and make the householder liable.”

Mr Loudon said that where disputes arose, neighbours should talk to each other to try to resolve it before involving the council.

He said: “Only if negotiations fail should residents bring this matter to the council’s attention.”

The council can intervene if the problem cannot be solved between neighbours. Council staff will cut back vegetation and send the bill to the householder.
