Bracknell hopes for success in Britain in Bloom

By Mike Pyle
September 07, 2009

The countdown has started for the  results of Bracknell’s entry in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition.

Throughout the summer,  brightly coloured floral displays have blossomed across the borough and in the town centre, all in aid of Bracknell in Bloom 2009.

Judges from the Royal Horticultural Society were welcomed with an array of colour when they visited in July.

They were taken on a tour in a sunflower oil fuelled bus, and then took a walk through the town.

This year’s Your Gardens competition has once again been a huge success, with the number of entries from local people and businesses exceeding expectations.

Entries for the Tallest Sunflower are still flooding in, with some tough competition!

Results for Your Gardens will be announced later this month.

Helen Barnett, marketing manager for Bracknell Regeneration Partnership, said: “When they visited, we showed the RHS judges just what Bracknell has to offer, not just with the flowers, but in terms of sustainability, biodiversity and community projects.  Huge thanks go to everyone, including our community groups, schools, landscape teams and sponsors who have helped to make Bracknell in Bloom 2009 such a wonderful campaign.”

The Bracknell in Bloom results will be revealed at the glitzy awards ceremony in October.

David Harris, landscape manager at Bracknell Forest Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the response to Your Gardens.  The focus for the competition is always on participation, not competition and we welcome entries from anyone. The whole campaign has been fantastic, I am confident that the results will reflect this.”

Bracknell isn't really all that bad though, it still has some good shops, although I think the regeneration plans being put off for so long hasn't helped and the recession took its toll too. But it could be worse - it could be like Woodley.

A few flowers, with little variety make the place look a bit better - but it's still rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. Bracknell's going down! Reading's no oil painting either, but does have some decent shopping and lacks the feeling of terminal decay that Brack has.

Bracknell in Bloom always looks fantastic, and brightens up what is otherwise an unappealing Town Centre.

I must say though, the facelifts etc that have been performed on some of the units over the last year or so look great, and I hope these continue while we continue to wait for the regeneration.

Flowers may help mask the smell temporarily but whats really needed is industrial-grade fumigation and 35 bulldozers!

While Bracknell isn't all that great, they can do a really good job with the flowers
