Judges impressed by Reading in Bloom

The judges of Reading in Bloom were down by the riverside to see the lovely floral efforts of Reading’s keen gardeners.

Councillor Jeanette Skeats, who chairs Reading in Bloom, was out with committee member Peter Thompson judging the annual competition.

She said: “The standards this year were very high and it was very difficult to make a decision.

“We were very impressed with the efforts everyone had made and the standards of maintenance we saw.

“That made it very difficult to choose but it was very impressive.”

Cllr Skeats said there were fewer riverside entries this year.

She said: “It meant that we were able to do the judging without having to hire a boat, which was a good thing given that the committee hasn’t got much money this year.

“However it was disappointing that there were fewer riverside entries.”

Overall the number of entries are about the same as last year with a slight increase in communal gardens and front gardens more than 12 feet.

Could the council not encourage this in more run-down parts of town? Maybe best-kept garden or something!?
