Life with 60s style star Ben Sherman

Fashion fans can get a taste of what it was like to live with a Mod icon when the wife of a 60s design legend comes to Reading for a talk.

Daphne Sherman, widow of designer Ben Sherman, will take part in an event called Married to The Mod, part of Reading Museum’s celebrations to go with its Reading, Steady, Go! exhibition.

The event will feature Mrs Sherman in conversation with author Paolo Hewitt, best known in Reading for the book he wrote about maverick former Royals forward Robin Friday.

During the conversation Mrs Sherman will give an insight into life with her husband whose styles became famous with Mods during the 60s and with Mod revivalists in the 70s. She will tell a story of hardship and success with a message of dedication and passion.

Bobby Lonergan, spokesman for the Blagrave Street museum, said: “The Reading, Steady, Go! Mod exhibition is proving to be very popular with our visitors and it’s a real coup to have these two leading figures from the Mod world offering their perspective.

“It will be an informative and inspiring event.”

Married to the Mod will be followed by a 60s disco at the 3Bs bar in the museum which will be hosted by Reading Mod and exhibition founder Paul ‘Smiler’ Anderson.

Married to the Mod will take place on Friday, May 20, from 7.30pm but guests will need to book their places.

Mr Lonergan said: “Thanks to the sponsorship arrangements we have with Pretty Green and Festival Republic it is possible to stage this event for free.

“However, spaces are limited and we would recommend booking your place as soon as possible.”

To book you can call the museum on 0118 937 3400.  Reading, Steady, Go! runs in the John Madejski Art Gallery until October.
