Halve exercise time and still get the benefits with this gadget

Bite the bullet and get down to the gym. Louise King tells you how to make it easy on yourself

I admit it – I am lazy. Just the mere thought of exercising brings me out in a rash. Honest.

However, with a 20-a-day cigarette habit and a penchant for fast food, I realised it was high time that I got myself down to a gym and started to look after myself.

Win six months free membership at Waves and a free PowerPlate taster session

So for a professed exercise hater, what options are there? I’ll give you one – the Power Plate.

This miraculous machine claims to do in 30 minutes what a full gym workout would do in over an hour.

Bingo! This vibrating exercise plate forces muscles to contract and relax between 30 and 50 times a second.

It’s no wonder that I have seen amazing results in just 12 sessions!

Now I’m very petite, so weight loss was not my priority, but toning up, increasing strength and improving my overall fitness were top of my agenda.

The PowerPlate’s other benefits include improved circulation, decreased cellulite and increased bone density.

After a little research I found that Waves Health & Fitness at the Coppid Beech Hotel in Bracknell offers a PowerPlate Course, complete with personal trainer.

I booked a taster session and rather cynically expected it to be either a) an horrific and painful experience certain to deter me from ever setting foot in a gym again or b) just a complete waste of time.

How wrong I was.

It was brilliant!

This was something of a surprise and has to be down to personal trainer Ray Mouzon’s motivating workout – because I’ve definitely got the bug.

Now you don’t just stand there and let the vibrations do all the work – you can’t have it all – but instead Ray introduced me (gently) to an all-round PowerPlate workout; warm-up and stretches, some cardio exercises, core stability training, and finally perhaps a little too pleasurable massage..!

I let Ray know what I want to work on for the next session and he builds a personalised workout for me (next week it’s the bum and tum).

He also increases the level of vibration each week as I get used to it, meaning I keep my progress up and don’t plateau.

I feel so good after; so healthy I don’t even fancy pizza/chips/a Chinese/an Indian.

I love the way that Ray and the PowerPlate make lunges, squats and stomach crunches fun – the machine seems such a strange concept to me that I mostly end up in fits of giggles (believe me, don’t try and talk while on it – you just sound hilarious!).

After 12 sessions I can now do proper press-ups and sit-ups, my wiry little arms have definition and I do believe I actually have small biceps!

In fact, I would say that my whole body is more toned and I am so much stronger than when I first started.

I cannot recommend this course more – it’s just perfect for anyone with limited time or who like me, need a good kick to get motivated.

I now think of Ray and the team as friends, and gone are my perceptions of intimidating gyms and exercises that will turn me into Popeye!

PowerPlate courses cost £10 per session with a personal trainer, or £100 for 12.

They've had (6 of) these at Virgin Active in Wokingham for ages...£50 per month membership and you can use them as much as you want! With Floor staff always around to help you, and you can use all the other equipment, have classes, use the pool, jacuzzi and sauna too! £100 for 12 sessions? Joke prices!
