Helping hand to get healthy next week

March 03, 2010

A one-to-one service of support to make healthy lifestyle changes is being launched in Reading next week.

The scheme aims to help people living in deprived areas to stop smoking, reduce alcohol intake and weight management and will assist with healthy living and increased exercise.

Four part-time health trainers have been funded by NHS Berkshire West and recruited by Parkwood Healthcare Ltd.

Ukonu Obasi, a senior health trainer with Parkwood Healthcare Ltd, said: “We want people to use this service so they can make lifestyle changes such as stopping smoking or doing more exercise which will make them healthier.

“We’ll also refer people to other local primary health care services as well as encouraging them to maintain their participation in these services so they can really feel the benefit.”

Claire Masding-Taylor, health improvement practitioner for NHS Berkshire West, said: “The trainers should have a big impact on getting more people to lead healthier life styles. Our aim is to reach out to the more deprived communities helping to reduce health inequalities in Berkshire West.”

The new service will be launched at Greyfriars Church in Friar Street next Tuesday from 11am. It will feature exhibitions by local health care services, a free health check and a raffle for healthy prizes.
