Nag’s Head in frame for CAMRA award

April 04, 2012

A multi-award winning pub has scooped another accolade from local members of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The Nag’s Head, in Russell Street has been voted the pub of the year by the Reading & Mid Berkshire branch of the organisation.

The hostelry, which has previously won several CAMRA and Reading Pubwatch awards, will now compete in the regional round with the aim of eventually winning the title of national pub of the year.

News of the success for the Nag’s Head comes at the start of CAMRA’s Community Pubs Month which aims to encourage use of local pubs.

Definitely a good local pub - only been there a few times but this has reminded me to go there more often. Last time I was there a few months ago the choice of unusual ales was great, bar was helpful with recommendations, and it was simply priced too (most if not all were a straight-forward £3/pint - bit cheaper than the Allied Arms too, which is another fave.).

I agree - Great pub and very friendly bar staff, always helpful and if you are not sure what beer to go for they let you try a sample first. 12 real ales constantly changing is a real plus ;)

Sign at bar entrance "Please keep clear" is unreadable, it's blocked by one of the hanging blackboards listing the beers; if the sign was moved perhaps less bar hangers. Also some coathooks under the bar would help stop people dumping coats on chairs - space is valuable in this pub.

Let's not pick holes too much though - it's a great back street pub.

Lose the bar stools to deter the bar hangers and it would be even better -some of us shortarses have to order from miles away. Really good boozer and great beer but still not as good as the best local pub The Hop Leaf in Soton Street though.

Lillibet, that does sound pretty bad but I think that 2 years ago would put the incident into the period before the current management took over (other Reading fact-fans might want to check this as I'm not very good when it comes to dates). I love the Nags and would be surprised if the current managers would let anything like that go on. I've often been in and have never seen any trouble, and I even saw a man knitting in there once with no comments being passed - the ultimate sign of a friendly and tolerant pub in my book!

@bodgerbodgerbodger - wish I could say the same. Not been in there since 2 inebriated idiots verbally and almost physically abused me two years ago whilst I watched a Man United vs Liverpool game. All because I was wearing my United shirt. Looked to the bar manager for help and he did nothing, claimed he found it funny. As a single woman alone trying to enjoy a quiet drink & footy match, I didn't.

bodger, I've never tried the bear. Does it come as well recommended as the beer? :-)

Good luck to them. I have had less pints than I should have in there so it's a por record that I hope to improve upon in the coming summer months.

Well deserved. Decent boozer run by decent folk. Nice pork scratchings too...
