No Golden Spurtle for Reading's Porridge Lady
By Linda FortOctober 12, 2011
Reading's ‘porridge lady’ is all at sea following her failed bid to win the Golden Spurtle in the World Porridge Making championships at the weekend.
Anna Louise Batchelor from East Reading used culinary sea salted water in her entry in the traditional porridge category. However, she was beaten by John Boa, a Gaelic singer from Strathglass in Scotland.
The speciality category – which Miss Batchelor won in 2009 – was won by Neal Robertson with winter spiced porridge made with blueberries, sugar and heather honey.
Miss Batchelor said: “Sadly I didn’t win the Golden Spurtle this year.”

Warmed semi-skimmed milk, a little brown sugar scattered atop, and maybe some fresh banana slices too. Same for Weetabix (TM) and similar high fibre-content cereals.
TBH, industrial-strength bran mixes are of no attraction, whatever the taste attractant; porridge should be a fortifying break-of-fast, not a daily assault on the digestive tract to be endured.
