New brewery takes inspiration from The Thames
By Laura HerbertOctober 15, 2009
The River Thames’ place in Reading has been the inspiration for the name of a new brewery in Caversham.
The Two Bridges Brewery is the brainchild of husband and wife team Kevin and Kerri Durkan and Kerri’s mum Susan Kane.
The trio went into business earlier this year, and began brewing their first real ale – the Golden Cygnet – in September.
A pregnant Mrs Durkan said: “Kevin came up with the name for the brewery when he was walking home one night over one of the bridges and thought Two Bridges was a good name as it keeps it quite local.”
The family know the area well as 33-year-old Kevin has lived in the town all his life, much of it in Caversham.
He 27-year-old wife moved to Reading from The Wirral to set up home with him in the town and the pair moved into their current house around three years ago.
Of the idea to start up a brewery, Mrs Durkan said: “It’s something that Kevin has always been mulling over, but then my mum decided she wanted to invest in some kind of business so it went from there.”
They decided to use the emblem of a swan to strengthen the Caversham link and use colour when naming the real ales.
Mrs Durkan added: “Our first real ale is called the Golden Cygnet and the second will be the Black Swan which we aim to release around Christmas time which will be stout beer.
“Then around March time we will release the Emerald Trumpeter to link the emerald colour with St Patrick’s Day.”
Unlike many other breweries the trio set up their business in one of their garages, whose top secret location cannot be revealed, and hope to supply their real ale to a number of pubs in the town.
Publicans and real ale drinkers can also sample The Two Bridges Brewery’s Golden Cygnet at a special launch party at The Nags Head in Russell Street next Monday from 7pm.
