Raise a pint to The Baron Cadogan

October 14, 2009

A Caversham pub has been listed in the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Beer Guide 2010.

The Baron Cadogan in Prospect Street has been commended for its quality real ales by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) after being added by local branch members to this year’s guide.

It is the only pub in the town to be recognised in this way in the Good Beer Guide 2010 after being chosen by Reading CAMRA group.

The selection process involved local members making visits to the pub to check on the quality of the real ales on offer.

The Baron Cadogan, which hosts two annual beer festivals, serves a range of beers from both regional and microbreweries.

“Our staff work hard to ensure the real ales are kept in first-class conditions at all times,” said manager Daniel Gutteridge.

“I am delighted we have been recognised by CAMRA members.”

CAMRA said: “The Baron Cadogan deserves its place in the guide. It’s our belief that if a licensee serves an excellent pint of real ale, then everything else in the pub is likely to be of an equally high standard.”

Other local pubs in the guide include:

The Allied Arms, St Mary’s Butts, Reading

The Eldon Arms, Eldon Terrace, Reading

The Foresters Arms, Brunswick Street, Reading

The Hobgoblin, Broad Street, Reading

The Hop Leaf , Southampton Street, Reading

The Moderation, Caversham Road, Reading

The Nag's Head, Russell Street, Reading

The Red Lion, Southampton Street, Reading

The Retreat, St John's Street, Reading

The Three Guineas, Station Approach, Reading

The Magpie and Parrot, Arborfield Road, Shinfield

The Bull, High Street, Sonning

Thanks to everyone who spotted our mistake. The Baron is NOT the only pub in Reading to feature in the CAMRA guide but instead was the only one added by local members. I've corrected the original story to reflect this and apologise for any confusion caused.

Good to know the evening posts research is consistent in it's non existance.

There appear to be about 10 other pubs in Reading listed in the Good Beer Guide Berkshire section, however under "Reading" whereas the Baron Cadogan is listed separately under "Caversham". A small amount of research (i.e. checking in the guide itself) would have prevented the erroneous comment about the BC being the only pub in Reading being in the Good Beer Guide appearing.

As far as I can tell, the 2010 CAMRA Good Beer Guide has no less than TEN other pubs in the Berkshire section listed unsurprisingly under "Reading". The Baron Cadogan is however listed separately under "Caversham" for some reason, rather oddly since I think Caversham has been part of Reading Borough since about 1911. Reading has of course had a number of its excellent real ale watering holes listed in the Good Beer Guides over the years, so the minimum amount of research (e.g. checking in the guide) would have prevented the erroneous comment that the Baron C is the "only pub in Reading listed in the Good Beer Guide". And I'm not even a CAMRA member !!

As has been said, this article is rubbish, and I'm surprised the Post hasn't corrected its mistake that hardly helps all the other GBG-listed pubs set out by the Grauniad Reader.

One other pub is featured, but for other reasons - the Jolly Anglers is pictured in an article about pubs closed or under threat.

So he's never actually been there then..

The Brown Cardigan may serve decent beer, but that doesn't prevent it being utterly drab and soulless. It's more like a showroom than a pub.

"The Baron Cadogan in Prospect Street is the only pub in Reading to feature". This is just plain wrong. Do you mean the only pub in Caversham or is there something else unique about the Baron that you were trying to get across?

I used to live around the corner - but made sure I went to some of the other pubs to avoid the Amersham Road lot in the Baron...

I still think of it as the Co-op.
One who knows, Chaversham

And the Retreat, Eldon, Allied Arms, Hobgoblin, Hopleaf, Moderation, Red Lion and Three Guineas. Counts as the only one not to have been listed before, and never to have won Pub of the Year. I believe the man who raised their beer quality to Good Beer Guide quality now works in the Hobgoblin.

It might be the only Wetherspoons pub in Reading but not the only pub in Reading in the Good Beer Guide

"The Baron Cadogan in Prospect Street is the only pub in Reading to feature" ~ only if you dont read the other entries .... or did I imagine the Nags being in there?
