The Mission Mexican Grill is coming to The Oracle

You ‘burrito’ believe it. An authentic taste of Mexico served the Speedy Gonzalez way is coming to The Oracle Riverside this month.

The Mission Mexican Grill – which is due to open its doors on Thursday, September 24 – promises to tantalise diners’ tastebuds with delicious burritos, tacos and fajitas served at an unstoppable rate.

And the emphasis is certainly on fast food with more than 10,000 burritos flying out of the kitchens at the two Mission restaurants in Oxford each month.

The concept was launched in March 2008 by husband and wife Jan and Sharon Rasmussen, who fell in love with Californian-Mexican cuisine while living in The Mission district of San Francisco.

And the pair said they are excited about bringing the burrito revolution to Reading.

“We can’t wait to open our third restaurant,” said Sharon.

“When you think of Mexican restaurants it tends to be shoddy deep fried beans.

“What we are offering is something new and exciting; meat and vegetable burritos and tortillas made fresh in front of your eyes.

“The food is truly authentic and prepared using traditional methods. We can make a burrito every 30 to 40 seconds.

“And the location by The Oracle, with its huge footfall, is as good as it gets.

“We were looking for somewhere that offered the same diverse mix of people as in Oxford, and Reading certainly has that.”

The couple are splashing out £250,000 to create an inviting eaterie with exposed wood floors and pictures of South American landmarks.

The 100-seater restaurant will have a small outdoor piazza but Sharon said the main market will be shoppers and workers looking for a quick snack to go.

“It’s such quick, filling, cheap and tasty food, and everyone likes it,” she said. “You can grab a lunch for under a fiver.

“When we started up in Oxford we had queues out the door and it has just got busier and busier.

“It’s a reflection that we are getting it right. It’s a fast casual dining experience and in the current climate, that is what people want.

“We hope it proves just as popular here.”
