1,000 jobs by next summer at Tesco warehouse

May 08, 2012

Supermarket giant Tesco has confirmed it will open its massive new distribution centre in summer 2013.

More than 1,500 people are interested in taking one of the 1,000 jobs on offer.

Tesco was given permission to build the warehouse on the site of the old Berkshire Brewery, in Imperial Way, South Reading, in September, last year, and construction has progressed rapidly.

James Wiggam, Tesco corporate affairs manager, said: “The opening will mark a significant investment in Reading and work on the site is progressing extremely well.

“We have already received over 1,500 expressions of interest in the employment opportunities available and, together with Jobcentre Plus, will announce a timetable for recruitment in due course.”

   So, where are these jobs being advertised. Im looking for work and want to work, but am being prevented from working by the petty minded system that I live in.

   Now, now, Polish fought & died with us in the war and have long associations with the UK.

Reading is not a good hub for traffic related business but good for jobs...

The warehouse at the Suttons business park will create traffic havoc.

Time to reduce corporate tax and road tax for night only trucking...and how that will improve margins and spare congestion.

   @dustybin If they are its because Polish people are honest and hardworking and english people think the job is below them. FACT.

   @common cents

It's a warehouse, so I would assume most jobs would be entry-level shift work of picking, packing and loading. Presumably in teams, so some team leaders. Of course there'll be some managers too. But the majority will be entry-level...

   Blimey - Dustybin really only rears its head when an anti-Polish comment is to be made. How nice.

I'd be interested to know what types of jobs are available . . . whether they're all entry-level shift work jobs or whether they are more diverse than this.

   this is good news for the town after the departure in the last decade of a few big employers.

I hope they give priority within reason to people who actually live very much locally to the location.

   Of course you have expressions of interest-otherwise job seekers allowance would be cut. Whether anyone turns up is another story.
