Tributes to ‘the scouter who never wore shoes’

By Lewis Rudd
November 20, 2008

Scout leaders have paid tribute to a long-term supporter of the organisation in Wokingham who died last week.

Don Brett, 79, of Nine Mile Ride in Finchampstead, who was affectionately known as “the Scouter who never wore his shoes”, lost his battle against a long-term illness last Thursday.

The retired civil engineering project manager joined the scouting movement in 1936 and remained enthusiastically involved in scouting throughout his life.

Leave a message of condolence for Don and his family.

After leaving south London for Finchampstead at an early age, Mr Brett officially became a member of Wokingham District Scouts in 1971, where he spent a lot of his time supporting the Finchampstead Scouts.

Mr Brett was awarded the prestigious Silver Acorn in 1992, an accolade only given to those who have carried out 20 years or more of service to scouting.

“He was a great character, and many will remember him as the leader who always went barefoot," Tony Hayward, of the Wokingham District Scouting Executive, said.

A celebration of service of Don’s life will be held at St James’ Church in Finchampstead on Monday, November 24, at 1pm.

His family has requested guests do not bring flowers, but instead make a donation in Mr Brett’s memory to Diabetes UK, or the Psoriasis Association.

Donations, by cheque only, should be sent to J B Hall Funeral Directors, 142 Finchampstead Road, Wokingham, Berkshire, RG41 2NU.
