Kit stays on for Mrs R

September 26, 2003

In the West End Kathleen Turner, was the first of a procession of actresses who bared all in the scene in which Mrs R. confronts virginal hero Benjamin Braddock.

But Glynis has insisted on retaining her underwear for the scene and has a “no nudity” clause in her contract.

The former Dempsey and Makepeace star says she will not disrobe because she feels uncomfortable with the scene.

She was working with the Royal Shakespeare Company when she landed the role of Makepeace in the 1980s detective series which became an international hit.

The series also brought her a husband in the shape of Michael Brandon who played Dempsey.

Two years ago Glynis was at The Mill at Sonning in Make Me A Match in which she played a high-flying career woman, looking for an appropriate mate.

She told me then that although she had enjoyed playing Makepeace she wished she had been more financially savvy in the contract she signed for the series.

She also played Soolin in the cult TV series Blake’s 7 and had the scantily dressed title role in Jane – a TV series which evolved from a comic strip.

More recently she starres in the series Night And Day.

By not getting her kit off in The Graduate she has at least avoided the fate of Jerry Hall, whose appearance in the scene was described by one critic as ‘two fried eggs in the gloaming’.

The play is Terry Johnson’s adaptation of the novel by Charles Webb which Warner Brothers Studios turned into a classic 1960s movie, making a star of Dustin Hoffman.

M Performances at Wycombe Swan are from Monday to Saturday. For details call (01494) 512000.
