TALENTED teenagers from Shinfield have picked up two awards at an international drama competition.
SPUDS drama group, which is the youth branch of the Shinfield Players Theatre, travelled to the Czech Republic earlier this month to take part in the Class In Action competition.
And they came home victorious, picking up awards for the best overall production, and best actor for 17-year-old Tom Ower from Winnersh.
“This is the fifth year we have been organising a trip like this to involve the young people of our group to work alongside and socialise with teenagers from other European countries,” says Gordon Bird from Shinfield Players Theatre.
“It never ceases to amaze me how much they learn from the experience and how much they grow in confidence.”
The group of 11 teenagers wrote and performed their own play for the competition, based around the theme of fairytales.
The 15-minute comedy drama piece, called School 4 Fairies, included elements of traditional pantomime and saw the group beat teams from Russia, France and the Czech Republic.
The Class in Action competition is held each year and aims to teach English to people who do not have English as their first language.
During the trip the group had a chance to socialise with their international counterparts, enjoying a river cruise, drama workshop and disco. After four busy days the group returned to Britain and are now getting ready for their next show, Grease, which they will perform at the Shinfield Players Theatre in July.
