Song fans can take a trip around the world without leaving the comforts of Crowthorne as a musical group celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Crowthorne Musical Players has been celebrating its 60th birthday this year and is marking the landmark by putting on a show featuring some of the best-known songs from stages across the globe.

A World of Musicals is running from Friday to Saturday in the Old Gym at Wellington College.

Crowthorne Musical Players spokesman Kim Halliday says: “It’s a collection of songs from all the musicals we’ve put on over the past few years and a few more that we wanted to put in.

“We wanted to put on our favourite songs but we wanted a theme to gel them all together, that’s where we got the round the world theme.

“There are songs from Guys and Dolls, Oklahoma!, The Boyfriend, Sweeney Todd and more.

“It’s in Wellington College, the room is beautiful with a huge chandelier and everyone will be sat around tables like a cabaret.”

Musical accompaniment will be provided by Bracknell Choral Society’s Nick Austin.

The group has bee celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and is as popular now as ever.

“I’m not sure what the success is down to,” Kim says. “We appeal to people of all ages, there’s no cliques or anything like that, we’re just a big happy family.

“We work well together and there’s a lot of talented people involved.

“We’re not like a Glee club, we’re a musical theatre club and we’ve got some really strong voices involved.

“There seem to be a lot of talented people in Crowthorne, it’s a thriving village and there’s lots of activity going on.

“It’s not just in terms of arts either, there’s things like the flower groups, the family history society and then there’s things like the carnival.

“Everyone pulls together, it’s like a community of its own and its nice for people like us to be able to give something back.”
