Shane Ritchie becomes patron of Shinfield Players Theatre

By Alice Murphy
February 12, 2009

A theatre group has a VIP ‘Minder’ after TV star Shane Richie agreed to be its patron.

Shinfield Players Theatre asked Shane, who is starring in the remake of classic telly series Minder, to step in after the death of former patron, actor Anton Day, in 2007.

Trevor Grey, the husband of one of the Players, Debbie, knows Shane from when they were Pontins Bluecoats and asked him to represent the theatre in Whitley Wood Lane.

Anne Marie Townsend, the theatre’s publicity officer, said: “He immediately said ‘yes’.”

Although busy with filming, he has pledged to try to visit the theatre before the summer.

Shinfield Players hope its famous patron will attract support and publicity.

The new series of Minder began on Wednesday, February 4, on Channel 5.

Dennis Waterman, who starred in the old series with George Cole, famously wrote the theme tune I Could Be So Sood For You.

Shinfield Players formed in 1956 and has been at its present home since 1971, after ing buying it from the Ministry of Defence.
