See some new faces in 60s’ style

The ‘Modfather’ Paul Weller has named a new exhibition aimed at complementing the popular 60s-themed exhibit at Reading Museum.

New Faces is an exhibition of photographs taken by portrait artist Dean Chalkley which opened to the public at the Blagrave Street museum on Saturday.

The title of the exhibition was suggested by none other than singer Paul Weller who was at the forefront of the Mod revival in the late 1970s.

Mr Chalkley said: “I’d just finished a shoot with Paul and I was showing him the contact sheet with these images.

“I told him I was going to exhibit the images but said I was still unsure about the title of the show.

“Paul responded with ‘it’s the New Faces’ and that was that – it was the perfect suggestion.”

The show will sit alongside the Reading Steady Go: Life through the Eyes of a 1960s’ Mod exhibition at the museum.

The museum’s community curator Brendan Carr said: “Mod style originates in the 60s, but this exhibition shows how it still endures today among a whole new generation of youngsters.

“Dean Chalkley is among the leading music photographers in the world so it is a real coup for the museum that he has agreed to be involved with our Mod season.

“Dean has taken close-up and personal pictures of everyone from Bono and Jay-Z to Noel Gallagher, but I think his documentary work, chronicling youth culture, is even more remarkable.”

New Faces runs at Reading Museum from this Saturday until Sunday, September 4. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday.

The private unveiling event today will be followed by a special club night in the town hall’s 3B’s bar, featuring sets by Mr Chalkley, as well as DJs from London’s Black Cat Club and Reading’s own Club Rude.
