Celebrations warming up for Armed Forces DayBy Hugh Fort
April 14, 2010
A series of events has been organised to make sure Bracknell Armed Forces Day 2010 is an event to remember.
Organisers Paul and Emily Bidwell have organised a full programme of events to raise cash to put towards the big celebration on Saturday, June 26.
The money raised will be put towards the organisation of the event, which the organisers hope will be free to visitors.
The first fundraiser is a Race Night on Saturday, April 17, at Binfield Memorial Hall in Terrace Road South.
The fun starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £6 and include a meal of bangers and mash.
The night includes races to bet on, as well as a game of Deal or No Deal and a raffle.
The organisers are still looking for local businesses to sponsor six of the eight races.
A quiz night will also be held at the memorial hall on Saturday, May 8, starting at 7.30pm.
Tickets are £5.
Teams are asked to bring their own drink.
Other events held in the run- up include a promotion day in Bracknell town centre on Saturday, June 12, a service at Holy Trinity Church in the Ring on Sunday, June 20, at 11am, and a flag-raising day at Bracknell Town Council’s offices in High Street on Monday, June 21.
There are also more fundraising activities.
On Sunday, June 27, there is an Armed Forces Lunch at the Grange Hotel in Bracknell town centre at 1pm, costing £20 a head.
The final event is the lowering of the flag at 10am on Monday, June 28.
The organisers have received £3,500 from the Ministry of Defence towards the event and the rest is made up from fundraising.
They also hope to raise money from advertising from local businesses in two programmes on the day.
Paul also hopes war veterans make themselves known to him so they can collect their lapel badges on the day.
He said: “We’re really looking forward to it, the planning is going really well.
“We are still looking for veterans to come forward to collect their badges and companies to come forward to sponsor events as the costs are mounting.”
