John’s band have real specs appeal

March 30, 2009

Eye eye… a gig at South Street this weekend really will be a complete spectacle.

The performance by a band who love glasses promises to be top of the opticals and a real eye-opener.

The all-glasses wearing Popticals, featuring poet John Hegley, have reunited to once more laugh in the face of contact lenses and sing some silly ditties.

On his own, John performs poems about hamsters, invisible hamsters and a jellyfish with depression. With the Popticians, he sings songs about the wearing of spectacles, and the cleaning and losing of the same.

The band formed in the early 1980s. Since then they have had a cult following – and now they’re back for your aural pleasure. Let’s hope it’s not a sight for sore eyes.

The show starts at 8pm on Saturday at South Street Arts Centre. Tickets cost £12 and are available by calling (0118) 960 6060 or www.readingarts.com.
