New tracks coming from dan le sacBy Linda Serck

I meet dan le sac in the Milk Bar, a groovy off-street bar in Reading, where he’s sitting very inconspicuously in a beanie hat eating a toastie.
As I whip out the press release sent to me about his forthcoming album, Space Between The Words, and single, Play Along, I remark on the comedy description of him as ‘the bloke behind the bloke with the beard’.
Because dan is of course one half of dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip, who, two albums in, have amassed legions of fans with their electronic, lyrical hip hop.
Now, following Pip’s solo album last year, it’s dan’s turn.
Space Between The Words, which is out on Monday, July 9, on Sunday Best, is what the press release calls ‘leftfield pop’, and features a range of collaborations.
“After the last dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip album there was stuff we both wanted to do, but we knew it would work better without each other,” says dan, who talks in a calm, animated way (if that is at all possible).
“With Pip’s rock album, I’m not a rock guitarist so it would’ve made his album worse if I’d been involved in it. With this, I wanted female voices in places, and Pip can’t sing – especially not as a girl,” he grins.
Emmy the Great sings a track, as do Merz, B Dolan, Sarah Williams White (who sings on his single Play Along) and Pete Hefferan – one of the Petes in Pete and the Pirates – and of course a fellow Readingite.
“It came about in the pub,” says dan of Pete. “It was one of those drunken things that I think he thought I’d never follow up on.
“But the next day I emailed him over the tracks and said, ‘right we’re covering this, you’re singing, let’s do it’”.
Pete sings Arab Strap’s Cherubs, one of two covers on the album.
“The Arab Strap one is one that I’ve been trying to cover since before me and Pip got together,” says dan.
“It’s the first Arab Strap song that I heard and it made me fall in love with them.
“It felt like I’ve got this opportunity to pay homage so I’d better bl***y do it!”
And, while all the collaborations sort of happened organically, dan is already working on a second solo album and is ‘tempted to sing it all’ himself this time.
However first there is the third dan le sac vs Scroobius Pip album to record, which will be coming out before any more solo work.
I put it to dan that it sounds like he wants a two-pronged music career – one solo, one duo.
“In an ideal world I’d go for three prongs,” he says almost lustily.
“We want to keep the le sac vs Pip thing going cos we both love it. We’ve built such a following and it would be a shame just to stop because we’re both grumpy men.
“Then obviously more dan le sac solo stuff, but then secretly as well I’d like to start just a straight up and down dance project.
“I DJ so much and enjoy it but I don’t often get to write a 4/4 for people to dance to, so I’ve been writing a bit of that as well.”
But he reckons he’ll keep that third prong ‘a secret’.
“So everyone will go, ‘dan, dan have you heard that guy?’, and I’ll go, ‘Yeah, yeah I have’.”
Single Play Along is out on Monday and album Space Between The Words is out on Monday, July 9.
