September 01, 2011
A local folk club is tuning up for its autumn session, which gets underway on Monday.
The Nettlebed Folk Club, which recently celebrated its 36th anniversary, is run by volunteers and organises live music performances practically every week of the year.
Some of the biggest names in the folk circuit have performed at the club which meets in the Village Club in Nettlebed’s High Street, including the legendary Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span.
Acts booked aim to encompass different types of traditional and contemporary music from across the British Isles and North America.
This season’s bill includes regular visitor Phil Beer, who will team up with Reg Meuross on November 7.
Blazin’ Fiddles will also return on November 14 while world-famous Dervish will perform on Monday, October 3.
There will also be seasonal shows in December. Who Stole Christmas on December 5 brings together Mick Ryan with Paul Downes, Jim Causley, Tom Leary, Hugh Crabtree and Dave Hill from EastEnders for festive fun, while Belshazzar’s Feast – Frost Bites will take place on December 19 and feature Paul Sartin from band Bellowhead.
Also appearing this season will be Rory McLeod on September 12, Spiers and Boden on September 26 and Coope, Boyes and Simpson on October 31.
The club also has resident musicians in the form of Bruce Gomersall and Kith and Kin, a father and daughter folk duo.
On Monday, the club will welcome The Outside Track, a quintet comprising musicians from Scotland, Ireland and Canada and, unsurprisingly, their set list fuses these countries’ folk scenes.
The band – Norah Rendell (Canadian Traditional Singer of the Year nominee), Mairi Rankin (Beolach), Ailie Robertson (Live Ireland Winner, BBC Young Trad Finalist), Fiona Black (BBC Fame Academy winner) and Cillian O’Dalaigh – have been touring extensively for five years including appearances at major folk festivals across the globe.
Now, they will be bringing their fiddle, accordion, harp, guitar, flute, step-dance and vocals to Nettlebed.
The show starts at 8pm and tickets cost £12.50.
