Syriana sweep into South Hill Park

April 07, 2011

With the Middle East rarely out of the news at the moment, a band coming to South Hill Park this weekend promises to have its finger on the pulse.

Syriana, which says it fuses spy movie strings with echoes of a windswept desert and a Syrian romance, the group will be peforming at the Wilde Theatre this Friday.

Described as the band to watch by The Guardian, Syriana are pledging to transport the audience to another world through their use of traditional Middle Eastern instruments such as the gagnun, as well as western guitars and double basses.

Combined with backing tracks featuring the Pan Arab Strings of Damascus and projections from Italian filmmaker Niccolo Piazza, Syriana’s music is likely to have the audience conjuring up images “of a spy in a white linen suit, strolling through a souk, oblivious to the sulking assassins” (David Honigmann, FT.com).

Having recently been nominated for best newcomer at the Songlines Magazine Music Awards, Syriana have played to critical acclaim, with their performance at Womad winning the Guardian’s Best Live Act award in 2010.

Touring with their recently released album The Road to Damascus, Syriana transport the audience into an imaginary realm of Cold War spy rings in a bustling Middle Eastern market.

Tickets to see Syriana are £12, with a concessions rate of £7. They can be booked by calling the box office on 01344 484123 or visiting www.southhillpark.org.uk
