The Session: Cold In Berlin

Upcoming band Cold In Berlin are coming to Reading tomorrow to play tracks from their acclaimed debut album Give Me Walls.

Live, the London band unleash an incendiary energy reminiscent of early grunge and even earlier no-wave.

Frontwoman Maya has been compared to Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Siouxsie Sioux, but she reveals that her real inspiration is actually Patti Smith.

“People don’t normally draw that comparison but she’s someone that has really inspired me,” she says.

“I love her strength and power on stage.”

Give Me Walls made it into Art Rocker’s Top 30 albums released last year, describing it as having “aggressive hooks and punch in the face immediacy”.

Released on the band’s own 2076 label, Maya extolls the virtues of being a DIY band.

“We self-release so the label 2076 belongs to us and our manager. I would encourage everyone to do it that way. It means that we can work when we need to, and with people that we know. I think in this day and age, with the Internet, and with the music industry as it is, it really is the safest bet for new bands.”

Support comes from Reading band Kremlins.

Come along on Thursday to the Oakford Social Club, Blagrave Street, Reading for 8pm. Entry is free.
