‘Best guitarist in the world’ lined up for Reading gig

World-renowned guitarist Albert Lee will electrify Reading next week when he plays a gig to raise money for charity.

Lee and his band, Hogan’s Heroes, will perform at the pentahotel in Oxford Road, in the town centre, on Friday, March 5, to raise cash for learning disability charity Mencap.

With just 200 tickets available, the gig will be a chance to see the virtuoso play in intimate surroundings – and the band will stay at the hotel after the show to meet their fans.

“Mr Telecaster” Lee, who tours with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Aces, has played with countless stars, including Eric Clapton, The Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson.

Known as “the guitar player’s guitar player,” Lee, who also played lead guitar for Emmylou Harris’ band, is said by Clapton to be the greatest guitarist in the world.

Jeff King, who has organised the event, spends much of his free time raising money for charities like Mencap.

Jeff, 63, who is site manager for security for Regus based at Davidson House, Reading, has raised £15,000 over the past 10 years, organising two musical events a year at Jongleurs.

Jeff, from Sandhurst, also holds a bi-annual prize draw in Forbury Square every Christmas and Easter, and has raised an impressive £8,000 for Mencap in the past three years alone.

He said: “It was a real coup getting Albert Lee to play.

“This is a great opportunity for people to see one of the greatest guitarists of all time, while helping to raise money and publicity for such a good cause.

“Mencap provides really vital support to the people who need it most.”

Tickets are £20 and the gig starts at 8pm. For more information or to book call Jeff on 01252 870 232 or email jeffking.davidsonhouse@hotmail.com.

i can think of lots of guitarists (both alive and dead) that can lay claim to the greatest guitarist in the world title....none of them being eric clapton

john petrucci (dream theater), alex lifeson (rush), steve vai, frank zappa (rip), jeff beck...the list goes on and on ;)

   Hahhahaha,

"said by Clapton to be the greatest guitarist in the world."

That's the biggest compliment a guitarist could ever dread receiving.

Old Eric himself is sooooooo over rated it's ridiculous.

Albert is def better than Clapton though. Mind you, most are....
