Why it gets crazy when Seth’s on stage

Seth Lakeman has got it all worked out, heading off to Italy for a relaxing break before his tour, which takes in The Hexagon next week.

“Guaranteed sunshine, 25 degrees!” the 32-year-old grins over the phone.

Enjoying the luxury of some Mediterranean time-out and then showcasing material from his forthcoming fourth album when he heads our way on Wednesday, the ‘nu folk hero’ is evidently doing well.

However, he did start out at a very young age.

“I was introduced to music by my parents who ran a folk club, and I started playing violin when I was five years old.

“I got quite into folk music when I was 10. Me and my two brothers worked hard at writing English, Scottish and Irish tunes.”

After touring with the Lakeman Brothers and joining folk rock band The Equation, Seth then embarked on a solo career five years ago.

It’s fair to say Seth’s live shows are not really the norm for an acoustic band.

“It gets a bit crazy up there,” he laughs. “The double bass player is from an indie background, we have a rock drummer and my brother Sean on acoustic guitar is quite a heavy strummer, and the way

I approach anything is quite intense.

“That coupled with the energy-driven story-led songs, it’s quite an exciting show.”

The show starts at 7.30pm at The Hexagon. Tickets, at £17, are available by calling (0118) 960 6060 or logging on to www.readingarts.com.
