Third bridge – if only for a few days...

13/ 8/2008

Here’s a glimpse of the third Thames bridge – but it won’t help to improve the town’s traffic problems.

Instead it will take thousands of Reading Festival goers across the Thames from the white campsite and car parking in Mapledurham to part of the festival site in Scours Lane.

Organisers hope the footbridge will take some of the pressure off the ferries transporting people between the sites.

The festival site is starting to take shape on the banks of the River Thames with welcome signs across the footbridge, while the main stage has become a prominent feature of the skyline over Richfield Avenue.

With only a week to go until the site opens, organisers are busy preparing for the 20th annual rock festival with more than 20,000 expected over the bank holiday weekend.

Parking restrictions will be implemented around the site in Tessa Road, Cremyll Road and the surrounding areas from Tuesday next week and the Rivermead Leisure Centre will be closed to the public from Thursday, August 21, to Tuesday, August 26.

Tickets sold out in record time for what promises to be the best festival yet, and is one of the biggest festivals in the music calendar.

Headliners The Killers, Rage Against the Machine and Metallica will be leading the show, alongside a host of bands and acts across the stages of the site on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

exactly right DM it just goes to show what can be done if there is the will to do it!!!The question is , does RBC have the will to want the traffic in reading to improve ,or are they happy enough for gridlock to occur and then the only way will be to tax it with congestion charge. they say not but you can always tell a lie because the lips are moving!!

So a footbridge can be constructed in no time at all if there is a well organized company behind it.

Perhaps the council should close the footpaths on the existing bridges, get the festival organizers to add a few more footbridges, and widen the lanes on caversham bridge, and add another lane on reading bridge.
