WOMAD returns for a birthday extravaganza
June 19, 2002
This year’s festival promises to be one of the best music events of the summer with a sparkling line-up including Anoushka Shankar, Cara Dillon, Rachid Taha and Alpha Blondy.
As part of Womad’s 20th anniversary celebrations, it will be presenting more than 60 artists from around the globe across seven indoor and outdoor stages, plus late night DJ sessions and live performances at the ‘Womad Club Thing’.
And there’ll be plenty of workshops for adults and children in music, dance and visual arts; a traditional funfair; and the huge ‘Global Village’ offering food, drink and merchandise
from around the world.
Highlights on Friday, July 26, include Ireland’s Cara Dillon, Lila Downs from Mexico and Pina from Austria.
The intriguing-sounding Skate Naked from our very own shores will be among the cabaret acts, and The Shrine Synchro System will be spinning a few tunes.
The Bisserov Sisters from Bulgaria and Ernest Ranglin from Jamaica will be heading up Saturday, July 27, followed by acts such as Rachid Taha and Javier Rulbal.
Casa Latina features in the ‘Womad Club Thing’.
On Sunday, July 28, Orchestra Baobab, Kanda Bongo Man, Anoushka Shankar and Madosini are just a few of the artists injecting some cultural vibes into the town.
A weekend ticket costs £85 and includes free camping. Day tickets cost £25 (Friday), £45 (Saturday) and £40 (Sunday). Concessions are available.
