Katy brings the brass
January 17, 2005
She plays concertos by Lars-Erik Larsson and Leopold Mozart, (Wolfgang’s dad) in an afternoon concert at The University of University Great Hall in London Road, Earley, on Sunday.
She began playing with her local brass band at the age of six, before going on to study at the prestigious Chethams School.
In 1996 she was the brass winner in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, and later won another contest, enabling her to play as a soloist with the London Symphony Orchestra.
Her playing schedule took her to places like Hong Kong and Singapore, and she also found time to take a degree in pharmacy.
She was a member of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales for three years before deciding on a freelance career.
The concert, which Arion founder Brien Stait will conduct, also includes music by Bach, Sibelius, Britten, Suk and Tchaikovsky.
Also this weekend the Basingstoke Broadway Ensemble, with a cast ranging in age from 11 to 70, makes its debut at the town’s Haymarket Theatre.
Under the direction of Robert Purvis, who has worked in the West End, it will perform songs from the shows and a musical version of the Oscar Wilde story The Little Prince.
The idea for the ensemble came from enthusiasts who took part in the community show All Change at Basingstoke’s Anvil theatre last year.
