Q&A with Real AdventuresBy Jake Ben-David
June 28, 2012
SELF branded 'hunk rock' band Real Adventures are busy sewing their seed of pop punk all over their hometown of Guildford and beyond.
Guitarist Dom takes time out to chat about warm-up activities, underwater shenanigans and Steps.
Some may call Real Adventures a supergroup. Which bands did you all come from?
Supergroup might be an over-claim but we have all been in bands before. Lewis is most deserving of the supergroup status probably. He was the bass man for both Meet Me In St. Louis and Colour and now plays for Tropics. Leigh previously played in Hooray For Me and Tessa Jones (two of whom went on to form Polar). Mitch was in Exit Avenue, James was in a metalcore band April Dead and I played in So Long Cynical.
Describe your style of music by use of the mnemonic A.D.V.E.N.T.U.R.E...
A Daring Voyage, Exploring Naughty Twiddling Uber Riffs Enthusiastically.
Your shows look vigorous. Do you have a warm-up routine to avoid excessive lactic build-up?
Occasionally we do a hands in the middle, count of three, 'REAL ADVENTURES' type thing to get in the mood. We usually drink a few swift ones to limber up too. Actually Lewis has a full on stretch followed by a straight whisky - thinks it's part superstition, part tradition.
Which gig that you have played has been the most memorable?
Definitely playing with Saves the Day. The place was packed, they were amazing and gave us a really nice shout out. Chris is a really cool guy and wanted our merch afterwards - he even sang me my favourite song when I was chatting to him 'cos he didn't get round to playing it.
One of your songs is entitled 'Do You Ever Wish You Could Breathe Under Water?'. If you could breathe underwater for a day, what would be the first thing you would do?
That's an easy one, we'd go and find the jaguar shark, find it and kill it for Esteban.
If you could tour with any band/artist, dead or alive, who would it be?
I think all of us would have a completely different answer to this. I think a safe bet might be Blink-182, New Found Glory or Green Day - basically one of the bands responsible for making us fall in love with pop punk.
Finally, if made to perform a Steps cover, which would you choose?
Funnily enough this got us seriously considering it. Me an Lew are pretty keen to actually cover their classic line dancey type tune... 5, 6, 7, 8 I think it's called? That'd be rad.
