Q&A with Follow WylissBy Jake Ben-David
September 13, 2011
HASLEMERE'S own pop-punkers Follow Wyliss are gearing up for their Butserfest appearance alongside acts that include Funeral For A Friend and Deaf Havana.
We talk to singer/guitarist Toby about the festival, band beginnings, achievements, disasters and cereal.
Where did the band name 'Follow Wyliss' come from?
When we first started, we didn't really know each other that well so we were seeing who we knew mutually, and our bassist Jake got a name mixed up and it came out as Hollow Wyliss, then we said, Follow Wyliss?
What do you think your greatest achievement so far has been?
To play at many great venues at such a young age like the Southampton Joiners, Guildford Boileroom, Camden Barfly, Relentless Garage, 02 Islington Academy and more. Not to mention Butserfest which is going to be awesome!
You are playing Butserfest on Saturday, September 17. How are you feeling about that?
We are so excited, so many of our favourite bands like Funeral For A Friend, Lower Than Atlantis, Young Guns and Deaf Havana are playing. These are the bands whose CDs we buy, whose t-shirts we wear. To be on the same bill as them is unreal.
What other bands do you admire?
All the those bands mentioned and old school influences like Red Hot Chili Peppers. Our drummer would say Metallica then locally there are some great bands around like our friends in Goodnight Vienna, Tonight We Run, The Theory Of Six Degrees, We Caught The Castle and a lot more. The local scene is very good!
Have you had any disastrous moments on stage yet?
Just the other day at a show for Eagle Radio at the Aldershot West End Centre, our bassist Jake split his trousers two minutes before going on stage. That was pretty disastrous, but funny!
Finally, which is the ultimate breakfast cereal?
It's got to be Rice Krispies, or Golden Nuggets, or Coco Pops, or Cookie Crisp. They're all so good!
