Q&A with Cities of Glass

January 21, 2010

With an average age of just 16, Fleet based indie rockers Cities of Glass are building a reputation.

Lead vocalist Richard speaks about the band's past and future after the release of the new Breathe In Breathe Out EP.

Where did the name Cities of Glass come from?

After weeks of deliberation, arguments and terrible name ideas, Imran (the drummer) came to us with the idea of  “City Of Glass” after reading a book titled this, was lent to him by his brother. We then altered it to ‘Cities of Glass’. The process of choosing the name was a painful one but we all agreed on it and since then it has stuck really! I will mention a certain member of the band thought of the name “Buffalo Girls” I won’t mention his name as not embarrass him. I do think it was however just a joke to wind the rest of us up.

When and how did you form?

Cities of Glass as we know it have been playing together for nearly two years but it all started three years ago when David was putting together a band for the school talent and you could say he recruited me to play rhythm guitar along with a drummer, a singer and a bassist. We enjoyed the show so much we decided to keep on with it but problems arose and David and I reformed and were found with the task of finding a new bassist, drummer and singer. We found john and he joined without much deliberation however convincing Imran was a different matter; as he was already in two bands, but after a good few months and many buss journeys to school trying to convince him he decided to join.

What has been your most fun show to play?

Personally I would have to say our most recent the Christmas Tag-Team Special at the Westy in Aldershot, where we played alongside a large number of local legends including members of Reuben and headlining band; Hold Your Horse Is. It was a quite frightening welcome to nearly the whole local music scene, but a great night.

Which up and coming bands do you recommend?

I would recommend Airship, Local Natives, Arcady Bliss, Deer in the headlights and Darwin Deez.

What does 2010 hold for COG?

Well we are working on writing a whole new load of songs but whilst we do this, we will be venturing into new territory with t-shirts, our music on iTunes and Spotify and quite possibly a video for our song “Clever My Dear” of our brand new EP.

Favourite vegetable?

I would have to say it has to be iceberg lettuce (it goes best in a BBQ chicken, pesto sauce and mayo sandwich).

You can get the latest news and gigs as well as listen to Cities of Glass on their MySpace.
