Q&A with Hold Your Horse Is
September 28, 2009
Hampshire based math-rock band Hold Your Horse Is are exploding onto the scene with gusto.
Bassist James speaks to us in the build-up to their up and coming October tour.
Top band name, how’d that come about?
Well we are named after an album by an awesome two-piece mathy noise duo called Hella, we don't sound much like them but I think it made more sense before I came along and ruined everything because Hold Your Horse Is were a two piece band with guitar and drums...
Where did the band form?
Well I'm from Camberley but doing a degree at Sussex Uni in Brighton, Robin is from Fleet but has just started a degree at Middlesex Uni in North London and Chris is from Frimley but works in Oxford... it's seems like we are getting more and more spread out, kind of like the universe, perhaps we will eventually implode?! I don't know how Chris and Robin decided to make music together but Robin asked me to come a long and play bass in a text once and it went from there, we have all been playing in local bands for years and played shows together so I guess that’s how we all met and knew or knew of each other.
What is the best part about being in the band?
Bowling up to new strange cities and meeting strange new people or finding somewhere to eat after sound check? One or the other, rocking out to our songs is alright as well I suppose!
Your shows are somewhat chaotic, any memorable mishaps?
I break my stuff fairly often, but not even anything 'cool', just straps and guitar leads! I guess the biggest mishap was at the end of a set in Oxford when I was on the floor in front of my bass amp feedbacking my bass and playing round with the EQ. Chris thought it would be a great idea to trash his drum kit and I managed to get a cymbal in the back of my head fairly hard, pretty sure I was seeing double for awhile after that for a bit!
You are playing the Boileroom in Guildford on October 2nd. What can we expect?
Tiredness! We are doing a bit of a mini tour leading up to that date, playing seven shows in nine days with me and Chris both working full time, we will probably be in the swing of it by then so plenty of rock paper scissors!
What are Hold Your Horse Is’s plans for 2010?
I guess to keep putting out as much music as we can and to keep playing as many shows as we can! We are fortunate to have the wonderful Jon Pearce of ex-Reuben fame managing us now so hopefully he will keep us rocking in the right direction.
Hold Your Horse Is are playing the Boileroom in Guildford on Friday 2nd October. Listen and find out more on MySpace.
