Restaurant review: GalosBy Laura McCardle

Relaxing with friends over a bottle of wine and a takeaway is my ideal way to start the weekend, but choosing where to order from can be a long and difficult process.
There are so many restaurants in Reading offering the option of take-out food, from big name brands to the many smaller and independent eateries which line most of the town centre’s streets.
I find the problem with ordering from a well-known name is that when you get your food home it doesn't always match the standard of food you get when you dine in, which has, in the past, put me off eating there again.
But then, the difficulty with ordering from a smaller, lesser known or independent restaurant is that you don’t know what to expect when you order.
But then it’s only fair to give them a chance because you don’t know what they have to offer until you try.
Whenever I had a craving for spicy chicken I always dug out the menu for Nandos, but that will change now I have ordered from Galos.
The small Portuguese restaurant, which opened just four months ago, offers a variety of chicken dishes, with everything from pittas and wraps to burgers and salads.
When you order, you get to choose the heat of your food – the options being plain, lemon, original piri piri, hot piri piri and extra hot piri piri.
My friend Jess, who struggles to eat spicy food, chose lemon for her chicken burger while I was a little braver and opted for an original piri piri flavoured chicken pitta.
Each dish cost £6.15 and came with one side – Jess ordered some wedges and I went for some rice.
When we got our food we were both surprised at how big the portion sizes were and agreed we would struggle to eat it all because, in addition to the piece of chicken, both the pitta and the burger were filled with salad and cheese.
But once we got started there was no problem, our meal was delicious. The chicken was full of flavour and there wasn’t a hint of grease about it, something that is sometimes difficult to avoid when ordering a takeaway.
Situated in the middle of Oxford Road, it is not really the ideal location for my friends and me to pick up from as we’re usually a few glasses in before we order and it is too far away for us to walk to.
But luckily for us, and anyone else who likes to unwind with a takeaway after a few drinks, the Portuguese restaurant offers free home delivery for anyone living within a three-mile radius. The menu also offers a selection of starters, steak dishes, desserts and Portuguese drinks.
