Food Review: Yo! Sushi, ReadingBy Hilary Scott
December 10, 2010
We had a Raw Fish Hater (RFH) with us. “Yeeeeeuch”, “bleugh”, “ugh”, “minging”. She used every adjective for disgusting she could think of when we suggested going to Yo! Sushi for dinner.
“But it’s not all about fish and cold rice, really,” we told her before dragging her kicking and screaming. Well, not quite – she quietened down after we told her a) it was licensed and you could get jolly nice Sauvignon Blanc and b) we’d make sure she had a few cocktails on The Riverside later.
We sat down in our booth at the Yo! branch in House of Fraser and then explained the concept to RFH.
Choose dishes from the revolving belt and tuck in using, if you want, all the condiments on the table (slivers of pickled ginger, wasabi paste, soy sauce). Fill your glass with still or sparkling water from the taps at the table (£1 for as many refills as you want) – or order from the menu by pushing the red button in the middle of the table which lights up a dodgem-type pole and alerts the staff.
Everything is served on candy-coloured plastic dishes which are price coded, ranging from £1.70 for a green plate to £5 for a silver plate with all the colours and prices in between. So you know exactly what you’re spending and when you’re finished the waitress simply adds up the empty plates on your table and works out your bill.
Anyway, like all those who protest too much, our RFH looked at the revolving belt and then revealed
she actually wouldn’t mind trying the raw salmon.
It was a gesture we appreciated as Raw Fish Lover No 1 and myself tucked into plain salmon with sticky rice (salmon nigiri), tuna and some veggie spring rolls (Inari Pockets).
RFH could have chosen from a range of meaty starter type dishes including crispy duck, spicy chicken and beef nigiri or platefuls of veggie delights.
The secret to sushi is, of course, the freshest of fish and Yo! makes sure that’s what you get. And you can see (and smell so you’d soon know if the fish was starting to sing a bit) all the prep – the kitchen is right in the middle of the revolving belt.
We pushed our red button as we tucked in and order some hot dishes, focussing of course, on the meat ones. And, in fact, those dishes filled us so much we didn’t get round to what, in my mind, are the most stunning looking of dishes, the hand rolls – savoury cones of seaweed filled with rice and goodies like avocado, tuna, duck and soft shell crab.
Tasty vegetable Firecracker Rice along with Salmon Rice arrived and then our Chicken Yakatori and Chicken Katsu curry – all were simply delicious and the great thing about Yo! Sushi is that we ordered another Firecracker rice and Katsu curry just before we polished off our current plates – it was a seamless changeover.
We could have chosen a good few more chicken and duck hot plates but by now we were full and pretty happy.
I love Yo! Sushi – it’s fast food but from a different planet than most others. With an extensive menu which also includes soups and broths, tempura, dumplings, noodles, rice and a range of funky desserts, it really can cater for everyone. You can drink good wines or champers or miso, sake, green tea or Coca Cola.
You can take your mum, your granny, the children – and yes, Raw Fish Haters, too, as we proved.
Recently Yo! Sushi had a special offer to tempt sushi virgins in. If you’re one don’t be ashamed.
On Mondays, Yo! charges all plates at the blue price of £2.20 which is a great way to start – and there’s a takeaway service offered at the House of Fraser branch.
And if you lose your sushi virginity and decide that raw fish is not for you, we’ve proved you can take RFHs along with you and there will be enough for them to eat to make sure their stomach’s lined enough for plenty of Oracle cocktails.
