Food review: Broad Street Tavern, Wokingham

11/12/2009

Burgers, steaks, wraps and hog roasts are just some of the delights being dished up by the Broad Street Tavern on its revamped menu.

The pub, which is a favourite with real ale fans, prides itself on catering for all appetites and tastes, while staying loyal to the popular pub grub theme.

The new menu features all the favourites that have made the pub a popular dining destination, along with some updated classics and new selections.

One of the pub’s biggest successes has been the selection boards and good value BST nibbles, which are great to share and mean you can make the most of your favourite dishes or sample several different ones.

Prices for the selection boards range from £7.95 to £8.50 and include a camembert and mozzarella board and prawn platter, featuring crispy filo prawns, king prawn crevettes and Atlantic prawns in a marie rose sauce, served with lemon and rustic bread.

On my latest visit to the Tavern, which unfortunately was on a rainy day when its usually lovely garden was not so tempting, I opted for the rib eye steak with chips, onion rings and tomato.

This perfectly cooked steak had my mouthwatering before I even tasted it. The velvety texture was complimented by the fabulous chargrilled flavour.

Although not a new addition to the menu, my boyfriend could not resist the old classic of ham, egg and chips.

The portions were generous, but after polishing off these hearty meals we would have happily gone back for seconds if we had the room.

Perhaps the key to the Tavern’s success is that it is not just a great place to eat lunch, dinner or a snack, but it also holds summer barbecues (weather permitting) and has several hog roasts planned for major sporting events in the next few months.

Live music nights and a music festival have also pulled in the crowds and offered rock fans special dining treats from the barbecue.

Townspeople had a taste of what is to come with next year’s hog roasts on Wokingham Winter Carnival day last month, when the pub got involved with festivities by holding the latest of its spit roasts.

But it does not have to be a carnival day for you to enjoy what the Tavern has to offer. Whether escaping from work for a well-earned lunch or hitting the town in the evening to satisfy your appetite and socialise over a few drinks, this pub has it all.

We went to the Tavern on Thursday 30 th December and were extremely disappointed by tyhe food. I had an all day breakfast. One over cooked sausage, two nearly cold rashers of bacon, raw mushrooms, two eggs and baked beans. No hashed browns or other potatoes and no black sausage. It and the dishes my companions had were over priced compared with most other establishments in Wokingham. For example a burger in a bun and ten chips for around eight pounds. I have had much better breakfasts in the cafes in the centre of town at half the price.
