Rossini, WokinghamBy Sally Bryant

A winter bites, Rossini makes a welcome change from stainless steel minimalism – this place is cosy.
From the Italian flags fluttering above the door, to the towering wine-racks tucked in corners and cheerful lanterns, the feeling is trattoria.
The warm welcome you will receive will also make you think you are settling down in a tiny family-run establishment, off a dusty square sheltered by olive trees, instead of Wokingham's Denmark Street.
But when you see the menu, you will realise this is definitely more ristorante than trattoria.
The atmosphere is relaxed and fairly informal, but for the last 15 years Rossini has been giving diners more than just a taste of Italy, with a menu that leaves you spoilt for choice.
We all know there is so much more than pizza to the cuisine of the Med’s most beautiful country, but you might not realise just how much more until you study Rossini’s extensive menu.
Starters (hot and cold) range from the expected Parma ham and melon, through aubergine baked with brandy and cheese sauce to the probably-totally-unexpected snails.
Just reading the descriptions of the pasta dishes (many with seafood) and risottos will make your mouth water, and when you try to make up your mind over the main courses you will wish you had fasted for 48 hours before so you could fit in a few.
This restaurant also has a magnificent dessert trolley, which is to die for.
You will never forgive yourself if you don’t leave enough room to indulge in tiramisu or alcohol-soaked trifle.
Wokingham isn’t short of Italian restaurants, but Rossini has its own character.
The traditional, rustic décor and relaxed, friendly ambiance encourage you to settle back and enjoy.
Tables are arranged so you can tuck away in an intimate corner, but you will still feel part of the happy whole.
The food is more like mama used to make (providing she was a good cook!) than Heston Blumenthal and will make you feel cosseted as the wind howls outside.
You can’t have Italy’s sun, but you can have its style.
