Everyone’s having a crack at making it in the movies these days, and the latest movie star wannabe is comedian Rufus Hound.

There’s a host of other film comedies already in existence called ‘Wedding’ something or other and, frankly, this does nothing to distinguish itself. The Wedding Video is as mired in mediocrity as The Wedding Planner, The Wedding Singer and My Best Friend’s Wedding.

That’s pretty damning then, because what The Wedding Video aspires to is superior British comedies like Four Weddings and a Funeral and Death at a Funeral rather than mind-numbing formulaic filler starring the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Adam Sandler and Julia Roberts.

Taking a pseudo-documentary style, what we see on screen is meant to be footage from the wedding video Raif Moyle (Hound) is making for his brother, Tim (Robert Webb) documenting the run-up to his wedding day.

Tim is marrying Saskia (Lucy Punch) – the girl Raif had a crush on at school. When he meets her again, he’s clearly bowled over and as the two spend more and more time together, and the pressures of the Cheshire set wedding circus start to take their toll, it becomes obvious what’s on the cards…

As a viewer, you feel uncomfortable watching the events unfold, let alone laughing at them, and it’s also difficult to understand why this pretty, sparky rich girl would fall for either brother since neither has any redeeming features that we can see.

There are occasional laughs to be had, with great turns from The Green Wing’s Michelle Gomez as the wedding planner and Angus Barnett as the vicar, and the humour has a typically British edge that has some appeal.

The Wedding Video is a long way from being good but if it wasn’t for the talented supporting cast, it would be downright dire.
