Ascot actor Kenneth Branagh has been knighted in the Queen’s Birthday honours list.
The actor and director, who is preparing to direct a Jack Ryan action film, was awarded the honour for services to drama and the community in Northern Ireland.
“I feel humble, elated, and incredibly lucky,” the Thor director said.
“When I was a kid I dreamed of pulling on a shirt for the Northern Ireland football team. I could only imagine how proud you might feel.
“It feels like they just gave me the shirt, and my heart’s fit to burst.”
The 51-year-old returns to TV screens in BBC detective series Wallander next month.
Mr Branagh has been nominated for five Academy Awards, most recently for his portrayal of Sir Laurence Olivier in My Week With Marilyn.
He declined an appointment as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1994.
