TV Choice: Gok, Top Gear & True Romance

By Mike Pyle

Every week our square-eyed reporters take a look at what’s on TV – the highlights and the lowlights – and pick what they think you should watch or avoid.

Top Gear, BBC Two, Sunday, 8pm

Stylists’ enemy Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and his increasingly luxuriant hair and James May who, were it not for Top Gear, would probably be gathering dust in a garage, return for the 16th series of the popular motoring show.

Regular viewers of a particular repeat-infested Freeview channel may think the boys (read: middle-aged men) never leave our screens and that their hair magically grows and then recedes and then grows back again without rhyme or reason, but this isn’t the case.

The trio have spent much of the past year recording this series and it promises to feature the usual range of ridiculous stunts, incredible journeys and impossibly brilliant cars.

Its all too easy to be cynical about Top Gear – “What a waste of money, how do their races always end up being so close? Why is he dressed like that?” – but the truth is that it all makes for great entertainment.

True Romance, Channel Five, Sunday, 10.50pm

I’ve recommended this film before and I don’t care if I sound like a broken record. Forget about work in the morning and stay up to watch this.

Even if you have the DVD and watched it yesterday, you should still stay up and watch this because, in my opinion, this is the greatest film ever made.

It has absolutely everything – a gripping plot, great acting, a script full of memorable lines, a charming love story and, well, I could go on and on.

True Romance was directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun, Enemy of the State, Man on Fire), which is almost always an indicator of a good film but, even more notably, it was one of the first films Quentin Tarantino wrote (coincidentally Pulp Fiction is on BBC Two at 11.25pm).

It also features a stellar cast including Christian Slater, Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman, Patricia Arquette, Brad Pitt, Dennis Hopper, James Gandolfini, Samuel L Jackson (for about three seconds) and Val Kilmer.

Watch it.

Gok’s Clothes Roadshow, Channel Four, Tuesday, 8pm

‘Auntie Gok’, as he calls himself, is back and in his new series he’s travelling the country showing women how to dress to show off their physiques.

He starts in Liverpool where he’ll be coaxing the local ladies out of their tight white trousers and into something more flattering.

I know it’s not aimed at me (the only difference I see between dressing up and dressing down is ironing) but I quite like Gok – he doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously which makes it easier to earn serious brownie points by sitting through his shows without grimacing.

How TV Ruined My Life, BBC Two, Tuesday, 10pm

Have you ever wondered why real life contrasts so violently with your expectations?

Well so, it seems, has Charlie Brooker and he’s come to the conclusion that it’s all TV’s fault. He could have a point too.

In this new series he examines the differences between real life and TV in an effort to explain why you never met the man or woman of your dreams when your hands touched as you reached for the same lemon in Tesco.
