Survivors - Gripping drama on BBC 1

By Mike Jennings
November 26, 2008

Survivors is a remake of a hit show of the same name from the mid-70s that followed a group of people who survive an accidentally-released plague.

This re-imagining of the original show replaces the mysterious plague with a flu pandemic immediately making the show more plausible.

The first episode was a 90-minute introduction to a world inhabited by a handful of people who escaped the flu that enveloped the globe, but the scenes of panic before the virus spread were enthralling too.

It was a world of dead bodies piled atop one another, doctors shrugging their shoulders and a frightened government struggling to admit that they had no way to contain the outbreak.

One morning, though, everything changed: people woke up beside comatose girlfriends, cars contained dead drivers and the star-studded cast came to the fore.

Julie Graham plays Abby Grant who leaves her house in search of her son, who contracted the virus on a school trip.

Paterson Joseph plays Greg Preston, a self-sufficient former systems analyst who models himself as something of a ‘new man’ in the almost-apocalyptic world.

Max Beesley also shone as Tom Price, a former prisoner who was the only captive left alive after the outbreak spread.

Performances were superb across the board: Graham’s distraught mother was a step up from Bonekickers and Beesley was excellent as the sinister, multi-faceted Price.

Freema Agyeman also impressed as a teacher who is confronted with a terrible choice as a result of the deadly flu.

The characters are a little stereotypical which is slightly distracting but there’s no denying that Survivors is still a gripping piece of drama.

The cast make the most of what they’ve been given and it’s well worth a watch.

The most exciting drama I've seen on British television in years. I very rarely watch television and this was an excellent series. I would love to see this drama extended to a long-running series as the script and acting were superb. I found the series so interesting and really looked forward to each gripping episode. Long-running series please as this was brilliant! *****
