Invisibles? They may as well be

By Mike Jennings

New BBC comedy-drama The Invisibles follows a well-worn premise: a pair of old criminals – and masters of their art – promise to retire but, regretfully, are drawn together for one last job that’ll break the bank.

Set in Devon, this series sees a pair of ex-criminals – who were so good that they were known as the eponymous Invisibles – try to balance their allegedly sedate retirement lifestyle with one final fling. Played by Anthony Head and Warren Clarke, they’re a fine double-act.

The rest of the cast is stocked with talent: Dean Lennox Kelly, Mina Anwar and Jenny Agutter among them, but a good cast doesn’t make a good show.

The odd moments of comedy or drama are few and far between: ruined by being shoe-horned in between failed jokes and mediocre dialogue, as well as cheap-looking sets.

Even an appearance from Only Fools’ Paul Barber can’t save The Invisibles from, well, being just that.

When there are shows like Pushing Daisies, Heroes and the soon-returning Waking the Dead, The Invisibles just doesn’t do enough to maintain interest.

It’s a shame that a decent cast hasn’t lifted this above total mediocrity.
