Ferrell sticks to proven formula

4/ 3/2008

Will Ferrell made his stamp on the movie world in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.

He came close to that peak in Blades of Glory last year, however this offering won’t do him any favours.

In Semi-Pro, set in 1976, Ferrell plays Jackie Moon, the owner/ coach/player of the Flint Michigan Tropics.

His team aren’t exactly stunning in the smaller ABA league and soon face the prospect of folding as a merger with the NBA league approaches.

Facing almost certain oblivion, it’s down to Moon to motivate his players and prove to league bosses that the Tropics are worthy of a place in the new tables.

He enlists the help of a former NBA benchwarmer Monix (Woody Harrelson) who’s facing retirement and is keen to go out in a blaze of glory.

But it isn’t the storyline that Ferrell movies are famous for, really. It’s Ferrell’s unique take on his characters – they’re odd, difficult to like and rather than leading the audience, tend to be the main joke. But that’s the genius – they’re films well aware of their own stupidity.

No change here then.

Ferrell’s ‘man-child’ personality is east to spot – Moon thinks he’s a far better player than he actually is, and hasn’t yet shaken off the misplaced glory of his one-hit wonder pop song, Love Me Sexy, which helped him buy the Tropics franchise in the first place.

If that’s not ‘Ferrell’ enough for you, then they’ve stuck a ridiculous hairstyle on him too, just for good measure.

Semi-Pro is typical Ferrell fair; die-hard fans with an ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ attitude won’t want to miss this next instalment in a proven formula.

If, however, you’re not familiar with Ferrell’s own brand of comedy, don’t start out with this one.

Rent out Anchorman and see his style at its best – offbeat, fresh and funny for funny’s sake.
